The famous Ajanta Caves are located in the grand Aurangabad district of Maharashtra. The famous Ajanta Caves are simply the cave monuments which were constructed during the first century. These monumental caves have been declared as the world heritage site by UNESCO in the year 1983. These Ajanta Caves are well enhanced with primordial pictures and sculptures that are considered to be the sign posts of Buddhist religion art. These ancient pictures and spectacular sculptures clearly highlight the Universal Pictorial Art. These caves have been numbered on the basis of their primary distance from the Ajanta village. There are mainly two parts of these caves.

1. Cave One
This is the first approach of the tourists to the Ajanta Caves. This cave has no relation with the sequential progression of the caves. It is one of the oldest caves that were being built up in this site and its construction was completed during the Vakataka phase. This cave is well furnished with various relief sculptures and primeval carvings. Various carvings related to the life of Lord Buddha are also enhanced in this cave. The cave is also comprised with three major doorways, one being the central and the two side doors. The thick walls of this cave are about 40 feets high and there are about twelve pillars in this cave which collectively make a square colonnade.

2. Cave Two
Cave two is sited adjacent to the cave one and it is well known for the primeval paintings that are preserved on its walls and pillars. This cave is in the improved circumstances of maintenance as compared to the cave one. Paintings are carved all over on the cave except the floor. It also consists of the hall which has four colonnades which surround the square located at the center of the hall.
